Endless wire saw

Requirements list

  1. Cut to be performed with constant wire speed

  2. Use of small segments of diamond wire

  3. Possibility to find the same diamond grains for wire wear investigation

  4. Low waste of workpiece material

  5. Possibility to increase cutting speed higher than 30 m/s

  6. Possibility to use different cutting fluids

  7. Possibility to change distance between rotatory axes to control eventual wire vibrations

  8. Clear vision of the cutting gap and wire bow

  9. Controllable wire tension

  10. avoidance of non-cutting wire wear (damage caused by the wire-wire contact)

Ultra-precision lathe to be reconfigured

Based on the requirements list, it was identified the opportunity to build a new endless wire saw test rig by the reconfiguration of an ultra-precision machine tool. The machine is fully based on aerostatic bearing technology and features two axes of movement and a rotary air bearing (yates bearing).
